Hello, hello,

If you didn't know, the lovely I'm Not Yelling people are putting us on next Friday at the Hatchet in downtown Bristol. We're playing with Econo who are making the trek down from London village for your benefit and might play a few records after, too. You can stir yourselves up into a frenzy on the facebook event page if you like.

The setlist looks like a 50:50 split between old and new songs. We're looking to get a few more gigs in the near future and to do some proper recordings. It's nice to be back.

Toodles

Simon

Sat, 18 Jun 2011 14:13:00 -0700 Gig news http://youarenotus.posterous.com/gig-news-38136 http://youarenotus.posterous.com/gig-news-38136

Well, the Cooler gig next week didn't work out, Ali's got a big money wedding gig to play, but the good news is another gig has fallen into our laps. The lovely people who run I'm Not Yelling have asked us to play their next event at the Hatchet. We'll be playing with Econo (fresh off their European tour) and maybe playing a few records after (I've got a 7" of Wing Walker that needs to be heard!).

The set we're planning to play is half old songs (3 over 4, Iceberg Girl, and Noisy) and half new tunes, some that aren't named or quite finished. We've found a nice new rehearsal space and need to book some pretty intensive sessions between now and the 15th July.

Also, Jim has apparently bought some new effects pedals. This should strike low frequency fear into your hearts.

Sun, 17 Apr 2011 03:25:00 -0700 The return, again http://youarenotus.posterous.com/the-return-again http://youarenotus.posterous.com/the-return-again

I've sort of lost count of how many times we've got back together to make music. I've been in YANU for longer than any other band I've played in but, because we're all busy with real lives, we never seem to get a good run at it. But that's too sombre for what is really a joyous occasion! We've had 3 practices in the past month or so (which is probably some kind of record) and started work on 3 new songs (and polished an old favourite up a bit) and it looks like we've got a gig lined up in June (24th, at the Cooler, supporting the other band I play in) so things are going good so far.

The big news is that the excellent and lovely Ben has moved on to Birmingham (educating the kids of the midlands in the ways of righteousness). So now our low end is being provided by one John James Brooke (Jim to his friends) putting a very lovely Ibanez Jet King through a synth into a sweet Ampeg combo.

One thing that's interesting is how the internet has changed things for bands since we started out. We're all fairly tech saavy and watch what's going on with music technologies as time passes. We had stuff up on our My Space page as soon as we had it recorded, but we never really did much with it and it seems really passe nowadays. Uphills have an EP out on iTunes and Amazon and we've actually made a little bit of money off it. SoundCloud and Bandcamp have really changed things, too, and I think in the future I'd self release stuff through them, since I don't think Amazon/iTunes actually increased our market (basically everyone who bought our EP were our friends. Ideally I'd like to release things on vinyl with a download code, my favourite "format", but that might be prohibitively expensive for a while...

Wed, 20 Aug 2008 11:48:00 -0700 Couple of interesting Pitchfork's http://youarenotus.posterous.com/2008/08/couple-of-interesting-pitchforks.html http://youarenotus.posterous.com/2008/08/couple-of-interesting-pitchforks.html First up a really in depth interview with David Berman, singer and lyricist of the Silver Jews. The guy writes some really nice lyrics, and has a cool method for doing so.

Then there's a nice micro documentary on Public Enemy, all in byte sized embeddable chunks. Really like the second part talking about digging.

We finally got our hands on the recording made of our Louisinana gig in December. I've done a rough mix of 3over4 and it is now uploaded to our myspace page. You can download it from there if you'd like to.

We'll get more mixed and uploaded soon.

Wed, 07 May 2008 19:00:00 -0700 Pedal Fix http://youarenotus.posterous.com/2008/05/pedal-fix.html http://youarenotus.posterous.com/2008/05/pedal-fix.html You may recall that I bought a lovely new Dan Electro echo pedal last year. Tonally and effect-wise, it was great, but it kept cutting out on me in the middle of practices. I did a bit of background reading and discoveed that Dan Electro pedals have a bad reputation for the quality of jacks used in their otherwise brilliant pedals - the build quality of the unit is sturdy and reliable, the jacks are made of plastic and prone to failing.

Danelectro Dan-Echo

I couldn't return my pedal because I got it cheap and unboxed, so Simon and I set to work repairing it. My plan was to hard-wire some make your own George L patch leads directly onto the circuit board and lead them out of the jack holes in the pedal housing, then fasten replaceable George L jacks at the other end, so the pedal could be plugged directly into other pedals/units. Simon has the electronics skills so I let him figure out how to do it.

Inside the pedal the jacks are conveniently located on a small easily removable circuit board. A ombination of solder, four hands, and elbow grease saw the end of the retched plastic jacks.

Simon solders the joints of the plastic jacks

One down

After successful removal of the Jacks we then had to figure out which part of the George L lead was the signal and which was the ground - we guessed. After soldering the right bits to the output part of the circuit we discovered our guess was good.

Fixing George L to the circuit board

Fixed

The second lead was much harder to replace - trial and error saw us solder the signal and lead to various permutations of points. I think the complication was in the fact that jack triggered a power switch when a a connection was made - I'm sure Simon can explain better. We got there in the end though.

Impotent evil - the second jack pwned

Possibly the winning connection - I can't remember

Next we put it back together and shoved the exposed wire ends through the jack holes before screwing on the George L jacks.

The coolest looking pedal I own

I've now filled in the holes with blutack to stop the leads getting wrenched off the board. The good thing with George L is that if the connection goes at the male end of the lead you can snip off some wire and re-make the connection.
